Past Projects

A look at what I've previously worked on, primarily as an editor & director

Hominoidia Kind

Dir. Charlie Hammersley

Hominoidea Kind is an experimental editorial project that I was tasked with in my 2nd year of uni, and where the love of editing began.

Utilising clips and stills from internet searches and YouTube videos, I attempted to create a comparison between Humans & apes. I attempted to simultaneously have the video act as a tribute music video for the Radiohead song 'BodySnatchers'.

Although rough around the edges, I'm immensely proud of how this video turned out. Having a gritty found footage style, that's offset by the bounciness of the music. Overall its a fast-paced and intricate montage that can confuse the viewer with its visceral imagery and positive sound.

WE NEED TO TALK ABOUT KEVIN (SCENE RECREATION)
DIR. CHARLIE HAMMERSLEY

This is another project that I am very proud of. It was my task to replicate the final confrontation between Kevin and his mother from Lynn Ramsey's film 'We Need To Talk About Kevin', with the main focus of the project to capture the colour and lighting of the original scene. Using practical equipment like reflectors and Diode lights to produce a similar aesthetic to the original film.

This project allows me to highlight my developing abilities across editing, cinematography and directing. Creating dark shadows across the characters' faces and having a dark green background, it was important to have texture in the background in order for the characters to stand out from a flat colour.

BROTHERHOOD
EDITOR | DIR. GRACE LONGELY

This is Brotherhood, one of my biggest editing feats. Primarily edited to be in black and white, the film challenged me to appreciate the complexities of exposure and contrast while colour grading. It was an interesting editing experience due to the lack of colour. Instead of focusing on the contrast between colours and whether they complement each other, I focused mainly on lighting continuity. Changing to black and white after filming in colour was a challenging process, making it difficult to properly depict a change in time through the lighting. But the main inspiration behind the stylistic choice was the sharpness of the blacks and whites; it really helped our story feel more authentic.

A particular favourite element of the timeline is the beginning sequence. It took many consultations with the director, Grace, but finding the sweet spot on the colour was satisfying. Increasing the levels of blue and green really helps create an industrial aesthetic, in keeping with the film's themes.

SKYRAT: REDBELLY
SOUND ENGINEER | DIR. JOSH FRENCH
STILLS

An action comedy that takes place in a post-apocalyptic world, we follow the character of Skyrat as he runs his wasteland hospital, only to discover his on-again, off-again enemy Devil Head has stolen his assistant. Unable to perform miraculous acts of healing without her, Skyrat must retrieve her to save his tag-along patient, Mouse.

In this project, I was/am the sound engineer. This utilises on-location voice recordings from a radio mic and boom mic, while also using studio voice recordings to overlay Skyrat's voice in order to achieve the clear voice that wasn't possible on location. I am also making sure to edit a muffle over the voice to mimic his helmet.

I was also allowed to record some scenes with my drone. While they most likely will not reach the end film, they provide a cool alternative angle on the scenes and behind the scenes (BTS).

Final film coming soon...

WYRD NORTH
DRONE OPERATOR & SOUND | DIR. JAKE MCWILLIAMS
STILLS & CLIPS

WYRD North is a historical documentary examining the impact of witch trials on women and residents of Newcastle and the Northeast.  A mixture of on-location interviews with experts and on-location recordings of castles and mass graves have been used.

In this project, I was the drone operator and the assistant sound engineer. I mainly helped in the filming of scoping landscapes of mass graves. The landscape videos were utilised to record the scale.

When not filming with the drone, I was assisting as a sound engineer, operating the boom pole and mixing while the interviews were taking place.
